"Character is destiny." Heraclitus
In this piece we used the symbolism of a samurai standing under falling cherry blossoms, facing away from the viewer and looking out toward whatever comes next. We wanted to show that fate isn't luck. If you build yourself into someone deserving of your goals, you reach them because of who you became, not because of what you were given.
We chose the samurai because of bushido, where a warrior lived knowing his life could be short, which is exactly why character was the only thing worth building. The blossoms falling around him carry the same idea. Time is moving whether you use it or not.
We placed the quote in the bottom left of the scene, describing it the way an inscription sits on a scroll painting rather than sitting on top of the art.
