"Do every act in your life as if it were your last." Marcus Aurelius
In this piece we used the symbolism of a figure walking away into the distance with Roman numerals forming behind him, counting down to show that his days are numbered and lowering. We chose Roman numerals because Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, and because a countdown says something a clock can't. You can see exactly how much is left.
The detail we care about most is what happens in front of him. The numerals and the artwork ahead of the figure aren't fully formed, because the future isn't guaranteed. Everything behind him is fixed and countable. Everything ahead of him hasn't been drawn yet.
We ran the quote along the path itself, angled with the perspective, so the words are part of the road he's walking rather than a caption sitting beside it.
