"Virtue is harmony." Pythagoras
In this piece we used the symbolism of two koi fish swimming in a circle, complementing each other and creating a point of yin and yang. We wanted to show the push and pull that harmony actually is, two equals moving against each other and holding the balance instead of breaking it.
The fish are drawn at the same size and speed because we didn't want either one leading. We placed the quote small in the middle of the artwork, since we thought that was the clearest way to show what harmony actually produces, a still point that only exists because of the motion around it.
Pythagoras treated harmony as proportion rather than a feeling, and he said virtue was the same thing. Not the absence of force, but two forces that match.
The artwork is done in the Japanese sumi ink tradition. Printed on a medium-weight oversized boxy tee with a relaxed drape and wide shoulder.
